New Delhi, April 8: India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar welcomed the inauguration of the High Commission of Saint Kitts and Nevis in India on Tuesday. He stated that the establishment of this permanent mission will significantly enhance bilateral relations.
During the inauguration ceremony in New Delhi, Jaishankar noted that since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1983, the two nations have maintained a close and friendly relationship.
He remarked, “As you all know, India has fully embraced digital opportunities to promote good governance and economic efficiency. We are eager to share best practices with Saint Kitts and Nevis and other CARICOM partners. I am confident that as this High Commission strengthens its presence, it will further bolster our relations.”
Jaishankar emphasized the need for mutual understanding and the enhancement of convenient arrangements and frameworks, stating that ongoing dialogue will lead to greater ease in interactions. He expressed confidence that the High Commissioner and their team will work closely with his ministry’s colleagues.
He highlighted that the bilateral relationship between India and Saint Kitts and Nevis is founded on shared values, particularly their historical struggles against colonialism and for democracy. These shared experiences have created a deep connection, especially as both countries are members of the Global South.
In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, he acknowledged the significance of the formal inauguration of the High Commission alongside Foreign Minister Douglas. Jaishankar noted that Minister Douglas has enabled the exploration of opportunities and the exchange of ideas within the relationship. India is already engaged in a project related to the processing and packaging of lima beans. During discussions, they agreed on a framework for “quick-impact projects” that will benefit local communities.
Jaishankar also addressed health challenges, emphasizing the importance of maintaining medical supplies and emergency resources for CARICOM members. He pointed out that tourism is vital to the economy of Saint Kitts and Nevis, and discussions included the participation of Indian businesses in this sector.
Furthermore, he mentioned the advantages of making Indian talent and skills more accessible, particularly in health, tourism, and infrastructure sectors.
In January, Jaishankar congratulated Saint Kitts and Nevis on assuming the presidency of CARICOM and praised the relations between India and CARICOM nations.
