Mumbai, September 30 (Daily Kiran) : Rupali Ganguly became emotional while reminiscing about her late father, renowned filmmaker Anil Ganguly, during the FICCI Frames 2026 event in Mumbai. She revealed that her father’s biggest dream was to own a home in the city. Thanks to her earnings from the popular television show “Anupamaa,” she was able to purchase her first house, fulfilling that dream.
Reflecting on her family’s struggles, Rupali noted that her father, a filmmaker, faced numerous challenges in an industry that was not as corporately structured as it is today. “My father was a filmmaker. Back then, those who weren’t part of corporate filmmaking often had to sell their homes to make movies. There was a time when we lost everything. My father’s only dream was to have a home in Mumbai,” she shared.
Anil Ganguly was a prominent figure in Hindi cinema, directing acclaimed films such as the National Award-winning “Kora Kagaz,” along with “Tapsi” and “Saheb.” He passed away on January 15, 2016, at the age of 82.
Rupali also addressed the label of being a “nepo kid,” acknowledging her background as the daughter of a famous filmmaker. However, she emphasized her desire to carve out her own identity through her work. “I was a typical nepo kid, the daughter of a big filmmaker. But my father’s dream was something I wanted to fulfill. I did ‘Anupamaa’ and bought my first home,” she said.
Producer Rajan Shahi, who was also present at the event, spoke about Rupali’s early career struggles. He recalled how she auditioned three times for the show, initially facing rejection. “Rupali asked for another chance. In the beginning, her financial situation was tough. She often didn’t have money for bus fare and would walk from Worli to save costs. Seeing her struggle makes me proud of her today,” he remarked.
