Santa Clara, February 8:
The Super Bowl, the pinnacle of football, is here. This event is what every player dreams of from the moment they don their shoulder pads until they retire. Each February, millions gather in their living rooms to witness history unfold.
Super Bowl LX features a thrilling matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots. Although both teams have seen roster changes over the past 11 years, memories of Super Bowl XLIX remain vivid for fans. In that iconic game, the Patriots clinched the Lombardi Trophy with Malcolm Butler’s unforgettable goal-line interception. The Patriots are now aiming for a record seventh Super Bowl victory, while the Seahawks, denied a repeat by Butler’s play, seek their second Lombardi Trophy.
Every Super Bowl brings its own stories, and at Hustle Belt, we focus on the MACtion angle. This year’s game highlights several MAC alumni:
New England Patriots
Robert Spillane, ILB, Western Michigan (2014-17) — Active
Robert Spillane is the standout MAC alum to watch in Super Bowl LX. He was a key player for one of the most notable MAC teams during the College Football Playoff era. At Western Michigan, Spillane earned All-MAC honors in 2016 and 2017, finishing with 111 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, and three interceptions during his college career. His game-winning interception in the 2016 MAC Championship Game against Ohio secured the Broncos a spot in the Cotton Bowl. He ranks ninth in program history for tackles.
Undrafted in 2018, Spillane began his NFL journey on the practice squad and made his debut with the Tennessee Titans. He later joined the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he proved himself as a reliable starter. His breakout year came in 2023 with the Las Vegas Raiders, where he recorded 148 tackles. In 2024, he improved to 158 tackles, ranking third in the league. Now with the Patriots, Spillane has made a significant impact, starting 13 regular-season games and all three postseason games, including a crucial pass breakup against the Houston Texans. He will play in his first Super Bowl this Sunday in Santa Clara, CA.
Brock Lampe, FB, Northern Illinois (2021-24) — IR
Brock Lampe quickly reached the Super Bowl in his rookie NFL season after a four-year stint at Northern Illinois. Initially joining as a special teamer, he became a fullback and contributed to the Huskies’ MAC Championship victory in 2021. Lampe’s role expanded in the following seasons, but he remains on injured reserve due to a foot injury sustained in July, preventing him from making his NFL debut.
Thomas Odukoya, TE, Eastern Michigan (2018-21) — PS
After spending two years in community college, Thomas Odukoya found his place at Eastern Michigan. He was a part-time starter in 2018 and 2019 but gained prominence in the 2020 season as the primary tight end. Despite going undrafted in 2022, he joined the Tennessee Titans through the International Player Pathway Program and spent most of his time on the practice squad. Recently signed by the Patriots, Odukoya will not play in Super Bowl LX but could earn a championship ring.
Seattle Seahawks
Maxen Hook, SS, Toledo (2020-24) — PS
Toledo has become a notable source of NFL talent, especially defensive backs. Maxen Hook, an undrafted player, was a four-time All-MAC selection during his time at Toledo. He recorded 356 tackles and seven interceptions throughout his career. After signing with the Philadelphia Eagles, he was cut but later joined the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad. Hook is still awaiting his NFL debut but could become a champion if the Seahawks win.
