Rinku Singhs Fall from Grace: KKRs Struggles Continue in IPL 2026

New Delhi, April 18: The IPL 2023 match on April 9 in Ahmedabad between Gujarat Titans (GT) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) introduced a rising star in Indian cricket, Rinku Singh. However, his recent performances have left much to be desired.

In that memorable match, KKR faced a daunting target of 205 runs. Needing 29 runs in the final over, Rinku Singh was at the crease with 18 runs off 16 balls, while Umesh Yadav had scored 4 runs off 5 balls. With such a tall order, KKR had almost given up hope of victory. But what transpired in that last over became a thrilling chapter in cricket history.

Bowler Yash Dayal delivered the first ball of the over, and Umesh Yadav took a single, handing the strike to Rinku Singh. In a stunning display, Rinku hit five consecutive sixes, leading KKR to a remarkable win. He finished the match unbeaten with 48 runs off just 21 balls, marking a historic moment in cricket.

Following this match, Rinku Singh emerged as one of KKR’s and Indian cricket’s most promising talents. He earned a spot on the national team and had several impressive performances as a finisher. However, his journey has been inconsistent, with fluctuations in his selection for the Indian squad. Despite being part of the victorious T20 World Cup 2026 team, Rinku struggled in the initial matches, leading to Sanju Samson taking his place.

KKR has always viewed Rinku as a key player for their future. They let go of notable players like Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill but retained Rinku in IPL 2025 for a hefty sum of 13 crores.

However, since his meteoric rise on April 9, 2023, Rinku’s performance has sharply declined. After struggling to score runs in international cricket, he has also faced challenges in the IPL. In IPL 2025, he scored 206 runs in 11 innings across 13 matches, but in IPL 2026, he has managed only 79 runs in 5 innings over 6 matches, averaging a mere 19.75. Whether batting at number four or six, runs have been hard to come by. This decline in form is a growing concern for KKR management and cricket fans alike, raising questions about his future.

Rinku was regarded as KKR’s strongest middle-order batsman and a finisher capable of chasing any target. His recent struggles have not only complicated matters for the team but have also increased his personal challenges. KKR appointed him as vice-captain at the start of the season, but if his performance does not improve, significant changes may be on the horizon for KKR, potentially leading to Rinku’s exit from the team.

Since joining KKR in 2018, this explosive left-handed batsman, who became a hero in 2023, now finds himself facing a tough battle to regain his reputation after a series of failures.
