Pakistans T20 Captain Salman Ali Agha Considers Break for ODI World Cup Preparation

New Delhi, April 18: Pakistan’s T20 captain, Salman Ali Agha, is contemplating a break from the T20 format to focus on preparations for the upcoming ODI World Cup and the next World Test Championship cycle. With experience in 23 Tests, 50 ODIs, and 52 T20Is, he has emphasized that the 50-over World Cup is his primary objective.

“The World Cup is still some time away, but it’s essential to manage my schedule and workload effectively. If I believe a break will aid in my preparation for the World Cup and Tests, I will consider it,” Salman stated during a press conference.

The ODI World Cup is scheduled to take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia in October and November of next year. Australia will enter the tournament as the defending champions after their victory over India in the 2023 final.

Salman’s recent performance in T20Is has raised concerns, particularly regarding his batting consistency. Despite leading Pakistan in this format for the past year, he struggled to make an impact, especially during the T20 World Cup, where he batted at number three and failed to help the team secure a semifinal spot.

In discussing the Pakistan Super League (PSL), Salman acknowledged its importance in identifying young talent but cautioned against hastily promoting players to the national team.

“I prefer a process where we identify promising young talent in the PSL, allow them to play in domestic cricket, and then assess their performances before deciding if they are ready for international competition,” he explained.

He also noted that many players have been selected for international cricket based solely on their PSL performances but have not succeeded at the elite level.
