Anju Bobby George: The First Indian Woman Athlete to Win a Medal at the World Championships

New Delhi, April 18: Anju Bobby George is a celebrated athlete from India. She has represented the country in high jump and has made her mark by winning medals on international platforms, bringing pride to the nation.

Born on April 19, 1977, in the small town of Chiranchira in Kottayam district of central Kerala, Anju began participating in athletics at the age of five. She received significant support from her parents to excel in athletics. Anju emerged as a talented high jumper during her school years.

Her career has been long and filled with achievements. Inspired by P.T. Usha, Anju has made a name for herself in athletics through hard work and determination, becoming an inspiration for millions of female athletes. Her medal wins on international stages have elevated India’s status in sports.

Notably, Anju is the first Indian woman athlete to win a medal at the World Championships, securing a bronze medal in Paris in 2003. Additionally, she won a silver medal at the South Asian Athletics Championships in 1999. In 2001, Anju set a long jump record with a leap of 6.74 meters, achieving a world ranking of 13th and a 7th ranking for the World Championships.

In the Commonwealth Games held in Manchester in 2002, she won a bronze medal. That same year, she claimed a gold medal at the Asian Games in Busan. Anju was honored as the flag bearer at the Athens Olympics in 2004. She also won a gold medal at the World Athletics Final in 2005, which she considers her best performance. In 2008, she earned a gold medal at the third South Asian Athletics Championships.

In recognition of her contributions to athletics, the Government of India awarded her the Arjuna Award in 2002, the ‘Khel Ratna’ in 2003, and the Padma Shri in 2004.
