Hamburg, April 18: Indian squash player Veer Chotrani faced a tough defeat on Friday at the PSA Bronze-level Hamburg Open. He was eliminated in the men’s singles quarter-finals by France’s Baptiste Masotti, currently ranked 19th in the world.
The match lasted 69 minutes and went to five games, with Masotti winning 12-10, 9-11, 14-12, 9-11, 11-6. Chotrani displayed remarkable resilience, managing to come back twice and push the match to a decisive game. However, Masotti showcased better control in the final game to secure his victory.
Earlier, Chotrani had pulled off a significant upset in the pre-quarter-finals, defeating the eighth seed and local player Kandra in straight games with scores of 11-8, 11-7, 11-7. This victory had propelled him into the quarter-finals, highlighting his excellent form.
Unfortunately, the Indian challenge in the tournament did not prove entirely successful. Other Indian players, including Abhay Singh and Ramit Tandon, were eliminated in the early rounds. Singh lost to England’s Sam Todd with scores of 9-11, 11-7, 4-11, 2-11, while Tandon fell to Hungary’s Balazs Farkas, losing 10-12, 11-4, 5-11, 9-11.
In the women’s category, India faced disappointment as well. Former world number 10, Joshna Chinappa, was defeated by New Zealand’s Joelle King, who won 11-9, 11-7, 9-11, 11-4 to secure her place in the quarter-finals. Although Chinappa managed to win one game, she could not progress further due to a lack of experience and consistency.
Meanwhile, Spain’s Marta Dominguez had an impressive performance, defeating the eighth seed to reach the quarter-finals of a Bronze-level tournament for the first time. She broke a streak of six consecutive losses, winning with scores of 11-7, 9-11, 11-5, 11-3.
With Chotrani’s defeat, the Indian challenge in the tournament has come to an end.
