Lucknow, March 23: The Uttar Pradesh government is actively working to develop religious sites and lesser-known mythological heritage, linking them to tourism and the local economy. As part of this initiative, the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department is revitalizing the state-protected monument, the Bada Shivala Shri Siddhnath Temple, located in the Sadar area of the capital. This project is now in its final phase.
Over ₹1 crore has been allocated for this project, with approximately 75% of the work already completed. Built with Lakhori bricks, Surkhi, and lime, this temple is renowned for its unique architectural style. The temple, which houses a self-manifested Shivling known as Baba Siddhnath, serves as a significant center of devotion for pilgrims. A traveler’s hall and accommodation for visitors have been completed, providing facilities for devotees and religious events.
Additionally, interlocking work has been done on the access roads to the temple, enhancing accessibility. Construction of separate restrooms for men and women is nearing completion.
Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh stated, “Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the state government is committed to developing lesser-known mythological sites as part of a faith-based economic model, placing them on the tourism map.”
He emphasized that the development of such sites not only strengthens the faith of devotees but also creates local employment, promotes small businesses, and bolsters the regional economy. “The development of Bada Shivala Shri Siddhnath Temple is part of this vision of faith and economy. Once completed, this site will attract both pilgrims and tourists, providing a new impetus to the local economy,” he added.
As part of the overall beautification of the temple complex, attractive lighting arrangements are being installed, enhancing the temple’s grandeur at night. Green spaces are being developed, along with planting and landscaping efforts. Benches for devotees, improved sanitation management, drinking water facilities, and signboards are also being set up.
Furthermore, aesthetic walls and an entrance gate are being constructed to give the complex an organized and cohesive appearance. According to local beliefs, this sacred site is linked to the era of Lord Rama, where it is said that Lakshman worshipped Lord Shiva during their exile. This historical significance has made the site a center of deep faith for devotees since ancient times.
The self-manifested Shivling in the temple is considered miraculous, attracting devotees from far and wide. Local tradition holds that if a devotee offers water here with complete faith and adherence for 40 consecutive days, their wishes will be fulfilled. This belief ensures a steady flow of visitors throughout the year, with significant increases during special occasions.
Grand religious events, prayers, bhajans, and fairs are organized during Mahashivratri and the holy month of Sawan, drawing thousands of devotees from Lucknow and surrounding districts, creating a spiritually vibrant atmosphere. The temple’s religious, historical, and cultural significance not only establishes it as a center of faith but also as an important spiritual heritage of the region.
