New Delhi, June 23: Union Minister of State George Kurien has resigned. President Droupadi Murmu has accepted his resignation with immediate effect. The President’s office confirmed that the resignation was accepted under Article 75(2) of the Constitution, based on the Prime Minister’s advice.
George Kurien is a leader of the BJP in Kerala. His term ended on June 21. The party had already indicated that he would not be sent to the Rajya Sabha. His Rajya Sabha term from Madhya Pradesh was set to conclude on June 24, 2026. Due to the constitutional provision of not being a member of Parliament, he was compelled to resign. The party has not issued any official statement regarding his resignation.
Kurien took the oath as Union Minister of State on June 9, 2024. He was assigned responsibilities for the Ministry of Minority Affairs and the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying on June 11. The 65-year-old Kurien has been a senior leader in the BJP since its inception in 1980, having held various responsibilities within the organization. Notably, he has worked to expand the party’s presence in Kerala.
A resident of Kottayam, Kurien was appointed as a minister in the Modi government 3.0, which was part of the party’s Christian outreach strategy in Kerala. He contested the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections as the BJP candidate from the Kanjirappilly seat but lost.
Kurien’s resignation has sparked discussions, given his prominent role as a senior leader of the Kerala BJP and a key figure in the Christian community. He has played significant roles as the Vice President of the Kerala BJP, spokesperson, National Vice President of the Minority Front, and a board member of the National Commission for Minorities.
