Renowned Karnataka Doctor Takes His Own Life Amidst Battle with Lung Cancer

Belagavi, May 22: A well-known doctor suffering from lung cancer tragically took his own life at his home in Belagavi on Friday.

The deceased has been identified as Dr. Dinesh Bhatkal, who dedicated 40 years of his career to the KLE Institute. According to police reports, he was serving as an administrator at the hospital operated by the KLE Institute.

Originally from Ankola in Karwar district, Dr. Dinesh had recently settled in Belagavi. He was undergoing treatment for lung cancer at KLE Hospital.

Police revealed that the doctor went to his home’s gallery in the morning and shot himself in the head. Authorities suspect that he could no longer bear the unbearable pain caused by his illness, leading him to make this tragic decision.

Further investigation revealed that Dr. Dinesh had sent messages via WhatsApp to Prabhakar Kore, the honorary executive president of KLE, and Dr. Kerur, who was treating him. In his message to Prabhakar Kore, he reportedly expressed gratitude for the support he had received over the years but mentioned that he was suffering immensely. He stated, “In these circumstances, I have made this difficult decision. This is my personal choice. Please assist my family and inform the city police commissioner.”

Dr. Dinesh was diagnosed with lung cancer four months ago and often discussed his struggles with friends.

The police have recovered the messages and are currently investigating the case.

In a related incident, a 23-year-old Ayurvedic doctor, Dr. MU Nikita, committed suicide on April 26 in Holalkere, Chitradurga district. She was reportedly distressed due to rumors linking her to a professor at an Ayurvedic medical college.

Another shocking case involved a doctor from Karwar district who allegedly took his own life in January 2026 using a double-barreled shotgun. He faced mental stress due to online criticism stemming from an unverified viral video that accused him of administering expired medication to a patient. Although the allegations were unconfirmed, the video spread rapidly on social media, leading to severe backlash that impacted his mental health.
