Shillong, August 28: The Election Commission of India has initiated a voter list revision (SVR) in Meghalaya, identifying a total of 34,730 voters for verification across four assembly seats in the North Garo Hills district. Officials reported on Friday that these voters were either not listed in the 2005 voter list or had discrepancies in their records.
According to the district election officer, M.S.N. Marak, notices have been issued to 30,580 voters identified for verification so far. The hearing process commenced on August 18 and is currently ongoing at all polling stations in the district.
As of August 27, hearings have been completed at 47 out of 190 polling stations across the four constituencies. The Kharkutta assembly segment has the highest number of voters requiring verification, with 11,796 cases recorded. Notices have been distributed to 10,890 voters, and hearings have concluded at 14 of its 62 polling stations.
In Mendipathar, officials identified 6,830 voters for verification, with notices sent to 5,720 of them. Hearings have been completed at 12 out of 40 polling stations in this area.
Resubelpara has recorded 7,685 voters needing verification, with 6,720 notices issued. So far, hearings have concluded at nine of its 41 polling stations. Meanwhile, Bajengdoba has identified 8,419 voters for verification, with 7,250 notices sent, and hearings completed at 12 of its 47 polling stations.
The district administration has stated that hearings are ongoing at the remaining polling stations, as per the schedule published on the North Garo Hills district administration’s website. The period for claims and objections, which began on August 5, will remain open until September 4. Following this, the notice issuance and case resolution process will continue until October 3.
The final voter list is set to be published on October 7. Officials noted that no calls have been received on the district SVR helpline so far. This ongoing process is part of the voter list revision aimed at verifying voter records and resolving discrepancies before the final list is released.
