Remembering Madhu Kambikar: A Luminary of Marathi Cinema

Madhu Kambikar, renowned Marathi actress, passes away at 73, leaving a legacy in film and dance.

Mumbai, October 12 (Daily Kiran) : Renowned Marathi actress and Lavani performer Madhu Kambikar has passed away at the age of 73, leaving a profound impact on the Marathi film industry. Her death has sent waves of sorrow through the community. Kambikar was celebrated for her memorable roles, particularly in films alongside noted actor Nana Patekar.

Interestingly, despite portraying Patekar’s mother on screen multiple times, Kambikar was actually two years younger than him in real life. Their on-screen chemistry resonated with audiences, creating a natural bond that captivated viewers.

Kambikar breathed her last in Pune, reportedly after a prolonged illness. Throughout her extensive career, she carved a unique niche in Marathi cinema, taking on a variety of roles, especially as a mother and mother-in-law, which won her considerable acclaim.

Her collaborations with Nana Patekar in films like “Hum Dono” and “Yashwant” were particularly noteworthy, as she portrayed his mother in both. Kambikar also appeared in the popular film “Shola Aur Shabnam” alongside Govinda and Divya Bharti.

With a career spanning over four decades, Kambikar was not only a prominent figure in Marathi films but also actively participated in theater and folk arts. Her performances in productions like “Ek Hota Vidushak,” “Jhapatlela,” “Hach Majha Maaher,” “Raghu Maina,” and “Yeu Ka Gharat” are fondly remembered. She also made her mark in Hindi cinema with films such as “Sutradhar,” “Yashwant,” and “Hum Dono.”

In addition to her acting prowess, Kambikar was recognized as an exceptional Lavani artist. This traditional Maharashtrian art form beautifully blends music, dance, and drama.

A significant turn in her life occurred in November 2016 when she suffered a stroke during a dance performance at the Yashwant Natya Mandir in Matunga, Mumbai. Despite facing health challenges, she continued to perform but later required hospitalization due to her condition. This incident marked a turning point, leading to the end of her stage performances.

Kambikar’s passing has left a void in the realms of Marathi cinema and folk arts, evoking deep sadness among her peers and fans alike.
