Veda Krishnamurthy: A Journey from Small Town Dreams to Cricket Stardom

Celebrating Veda Krishnamurthys inspiring cricket journey from Chickmagalur to international fame as she retires from the sport.

Chickmagalur, October 15 (Daily Kiran) : Veda Krishnamurthy, a prominent figure in Indian women’s cricket, is celebrated for her explosive batting and stylish play. She has earned a significant following not only for her contributions to the Indian team but also for her performances in Australia’s Big Bash League.

Born on October 16, 1992, in Chickmagalur, Karnataka, Veda began playing cricket at the tender age of three. Her early years included karate training, which she pursued under family pressure, despite her lack of enthusiasm for the sport. Remarkably, she earned a black belt by age 12. However, her true passion emerged when she started cricket training at 13, leading her to dedicate her life to the game.

Veda made her international debut in June 2011, starting with a T20 match against Australia, followed by her One Day International (ODI) debut against England later that month. Over her nearly decade-long career, she played 48 ODIs and 76 T20 internationals for India, scoring 829 runs in ODIs and 875 runs in T20s. Notably, she recorded eight half-centuries and delivered a memorable innings of 70 runs off 45 balls against New Zealand in the 2017 Women’s World Cup, marking one of her career highlights. Veda was also part of the teams that reached the finals of the ODI World Cup in 2017 and the T20 World Cup in 2020.

In July 2025, Veda announced her retirement from all formats of cricket. She shared an emotional farewell on social media, reflecting on her journey as a girl from a small town with big dreams. “It all started in Kadur. When I picked up the bat, I only knew I loved the game. I am proud to have played in big stadiums around the world,” she wrote. She expressed gratitude for the lessons cricket taught her about resilience and self-worth, stating, “Today, with all my heart, I am closing this chapter.”

Since retiring, Krishnamurthy has gained popularity as a cricket analyst, continuing to influence the sport in her new role.
