Plot to Attack Hindu Temple in Aurora Thwarted; Indian Embassy Monitoring Situation

Authorities thwart a plot to attack a Hindu temple in Aurora, arresting a suspect with extremist ties and illegal weapons.

Aurora, October 15 (Daily Kiran) : A plot to attack a Hindu temple in Aurora, Illinois, was foiled when authorities arrested a suspect just before the planned shooting. Reports indicate that the assailant’s rifle jammed moments before he attempted to fire.

The 19-year-old suspect identified himself as a “white supremacist neo-Nazi.” He appeared in a local court on Wednesday facing charges of making terrorist threats and illegal possession of firearms.

According to officials, the suspect had confided in a coworker about his intention to shoot at the temple, located approximately 70 kilometers from Chicago. However, when he pulled the trigger, his rifle malfunctioned.

Aurora is home to three Hindu temples, and police have alerted local places of worship about the potential threat. The suspect, Alexandros Paporekis, was apprehended outside his home in Palatine, about 60 kilometers from Chicago, following information provided by a coworker from a fast-food restaurant.

During his court appearance in Rolling Meadows, the judge ordered him to remain in custody until his next hearing on October 30.

Palatine Police Chief William Nord reported that a search of the suspect’s residence uncovered a rifle, loaded magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, and body armor. The recovered body armor was marked with symbols and designs associated with white supremacist extremism.

Nord emphasized the seriousness of the alleged threat, stating, “This threat cannot be underestimated.”

Prosecutors revealed that the suspect had sent a text message to his coworker on Sunday, asking for a phone call. During the conversation, he allegedly admitted to attempting a mass shooting, but his rifle did not fire, prompting him to flee the scene.

The coworker, who remains anonymous, reported the incident to Mount Prospect police, which led to the involvement of Palatine authorities. The suspect also sent a photo of himself wearing tactical gear and an eight-page document.

Court documents indicate that this so-called “manifesto” contained racist and hateful remarks against people of Indian descent and Hindu temples. Prosecutors noted that he expressed a desire to kill as many minorities as possible before dying.

According to court filings, Paporekis had been planning this attack for the past two years.

The Indian Embassy in New York acknowledged awareness of the thwarted attack on the temple in Aurora. They praised law enforcement for their timely action and stated they are in contact with the Indian community while closely monitoring the situation.
