Mira Nairs Salaam Bombay! Showcases the Lives of Street Children in Mumbai

Mira Nairs Salaam Bombay! highlights the struggles of Mumbais street children, blending documentary realism with impactful storytelling.

Mumbai, October 14 (Daily Kiran) : Mira Nair, the renowned filmmaker, has used her films to depict the lives of those often overlooked by mainstream cinema. Her debut feature, “Salaam Bombay!”, is a poignant exploration of street children in Mumbai. To authentically capture their world, Nair spent significant time with these children, immersing herself in their realities.

Born on October 15, 1957, in Rourkela, Odisha, “Salaam Bombay!” marked Nair’s transition from documentary filmmaking to feature films. The narrative revolves around a boy named Krishna, who is forced to navigate life on the streets after being abandoned. He confronts a harsh world filled with poverty, crime, and exploitation. Nair aimed to portray the genuine experiences and struggles of these children on screen.

During the film’s preparation, Nair and her team engaged with street children in Mumbai. In a 1988 interview, she shared that around 130 children initially participated in workshops. From this group, a select few were chosen for further training. Over seven weeks, the workshops not only focused on acting but also included exercises, dance, and opportunities for the children to express their personal stories.

Nair dedicated herself to understanding the children’s lives. She sought to learn how experiences such as running away from home or adapting to a new city influenced their perspectives. These interactions enriched the film’s narrative, allowing for a more impactful story. Her friend, Sooni Taraporevala, assisted in writing the script, incorporating insights gained from their research with the children.

A key aspect of Nair’s vision was to cast children who genuinely lived on the streets. She believed their authentic expressions and experiences could not be replicated through traditional acting training. Shafiq Syed portrayed the lead role of Krishna, joined by notable actors like Nana Patekar, Raghuvir Yadav, and Anita Kanwar.

Despite initial skepticism from distributors, who doubted the film’s viability without major stars or musical numbers, “Salaam Bombay!” gained international acclaim. It won the Camera d’Or at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival and received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.
