Remembering Havildar K.G. George: A Hero of the 1965 War Passes Away

New Delhi, March 7: Havildar K.G. George, a distinguished war hero and recipient of the Vir Chakra, passed away this morning at 5:15 AM at the age of 95. He is remembered for his extraordinary bravery, dedication, military professionalism, and sacrifice during the 1965 India-Pakistan War. The Indian Army expressed deep sorrow over his passing, stating that it is an irreparable loss for the nation.

Havildar K.G. George resided in Kozhikunnath House, located in Nedugadappally, Kottayam district, Kerala. He is survived by his daughter, Maggie.

Serving as a Lance Havildar (Lineman Field) in the Parachute Brigade Signal Company, George displayed exceptional valor during fierce combat operations in the Wagah sector from September 6 to 10, 1965. During this period, the area faced relentless enemy artillery bombardments and airstrikes, which repeatedly disrupted vital communication lines between the brigade headquarters and forward battalions.

Despite the grave dangers, Lance Havildar George led his section with remarkable determination, restoring disrupted communication links. On the critical night of September 8/9, 1965, amid enemy attacks, he risked his life to establish communication lines from the brigade headquarters to the forward battalions, ensuring uninterrupted command and control during a crucial phase of the war. His unwavering courage, leadership, and dedication played a vital role in maintaining operational coordination on the battlefield amidst intense gunfire.

In recognition of his extraordinary bravery and high standards of duty, he was awarded the Vir Chakra, one of India’s highest wartime gallantry awards. He remains the only individual from the Corps of Signals to receive this honor. The Indian Army and Signal Corps remember Havildar George as a soldier whose bravery during the war exemplified the finest traditions of service. His life and legacy will continue to inspire future generations of soldiers.
