
New Delhi, May 29: On the death anniversary of Bharat Ratna former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, Home Minister Amit Shah, and several central ministers paid their respects.
Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan expressed on X, “On the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, I offer my heartfelt tribute. A visionary leader and tireless advocate for farmers, he dedicated his life to the welfare of the agricultural community and the upliftment of rural India. His unwavering commitment to social justice, rural development, and the empowerment of farming communities will always be remembered.”
Home Minister Amit Shah also shared his thoughts on X, stating, “Former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna Chaudhary Charan Singh played a crucial role in strengthening democratic values from the freedom struggle to the Emergency. He presented a development model for a prosperous farming and agriculture-based economy, giving India a new direction. I bow in reverence on his death anniversary, remembering his integrity, simplicity, and dedication to farmers’ interests.”
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla paid his respects on X, saying, “On the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Bharat Ratna Chaudhary Charan Singh, I offer my humble tribute. RLD chief and Union Minister Jayant Singh Chaudhary also paid tribute to his great-grandfather, stating on X, “On the death anniversary of Bharat Ratna Chaudhary Charan Singh, I offer my humble tribute. The farmer messiah, Chaudhary Sahib, historically connected Indian politics with the aspirations of villages, fields, and laboring India, moving away from a power-centric mindset. He viewed the dignity of farmers, laborers, and marginalized communities not just as a social necessity but as the true strength of democracy. His ideas will continue to guide the nation towards self-reliant villages, empowered farmers, and an inclusive India. Chaudhary Charan Singh is widely recognized as one of India’s leading farmer leaders and a significant advocate for agricultural reforms. His political life and policy initiatives focused on the welfare of farmers, land reforms, and strengthening rural economies. Born in 1902 in a middle-class farming family in Noorpur, Meerut district, Uttar Pradesh, he began his political career with the Indian National Congress and was first elected to the Uttar Pradesh Assembly in 1937. He held several important state departments, including revenue, agriculture, home, and local self-government, and became the Chief Minister in 1970.
Renowned for his integrity, discipline, and practicality, he was the architect of major land reforms, including the Debt Relief Bill (1939) and the Land Holding Act (1960). A staunch supporter of farmers and social justice, he authored influential writings on agricultural reforms and left an indelible mark on rural India. Chaudhary Charan Singh served as the Prime Minister of India from July 1979 to January 1980.
