Rishikesh: A complete ban has been imposed on the entry of non-Hindus at Gangotri Dham in Uttarakhand, leading to increased political and social debate. Swami Narayan Das Maharaj, Mahant of Shri Bharat Milap Ashram, responded strongly to a statement by Arshad Madani, president of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, who called the ban discriminatory and against constitutional values.
Swami Narayan Das took a firm stand against external interference in religious matters. He asserted that no one has the right to interfere in the religious domain of others. Addressing Arshad Madani, he said Madani should consider that non-Muslims do not enter Mecca and Medina, which are exclusive to Muslim followers. Similarly, no one has the authority to intervene in the beliefs and practices of other religions.
In an interview with a news agency, Swami Narayan Das clarified that any reforms or changes needed within Sanatan Dharma should be decided by its own saints and spiritual leaders. He warned that allowing people from other religions to enter Sanatan Dharma’s sacred places would inevitably lead to disputes. Protecting the sanctity and traditions of religious sites is essential, and no leniency should be shown in this regard.
The Mahant further stated that the restriction on non-Hindus entering temples should not be limited to Uttarakhand alone but should be applied to all temples across the country. He claimed that instances have been observed where the presence of non-Hindus in Sanatan Dharma temples has caused disorder and disturbed the peace of temple premises. Strict rules are necessary to maintain the dignity of religious sites.
Swami Narayan Das also referred to the ongoing controversy and the protest involving Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand. He emphasized that the matter should not be politicised as it concerns religious respect and faith. Those trying to make it a political issue should refrain from doing so.
He suggested that if Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the Shankaracharya come together to resolve the issue, it would prevent political exploitation. Swami Narayan Das criticized politicians who had previously attacked saints but now pretend to be their well-wishers. He expressed confidence that no politics can weaken Sanatan Dharma, which will continue to remain strong with its traditions and values.
