Kolkata, April 23: In the first phase of the West Bengal assembly elections, a record voter turnout of 90 percent has been reported. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed on Thursday that this significant participation indicates that the Trinamool Congress is already in a position to win the elections.
During an election rally in Kolkata, Banerjee stated, “If my observation is correct, based on today’s voting, I would say that we (Trinamool Congress) have already reached a point where we can win.”
The Trinamool Congress leader also emphasized, “Do you know why so many votes were cast? This election is a fight to protect people’s rights, which is why so many turned out to vote.”
Furthermore, she warned that if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wins, they will implement the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC). This concern motivated many to vote to safeguard their rights.
At the rally held in the Bhowanipore area of the Chowringhee assembly constituency, Banerjee remarked, “Based on understanding the people’s sentiments and the voting so far, we (Trinamool Congress) are already in a winning position. I have no interest in any position; I just want to see the end of the BJP government at the center.”
In this first phase, voting was conducted for 152 out of 294 assembly seats, with 89.93 percent turnout recorded by 5 PM.
The next phase of voting is scheduled for April 29, with counting set to take place on May 4.
Meanwhile, Kunal Ghosh, the Trinamool Congress candidate and party spokesperson from the Beleghata assembly constituency, stated that the party is fully prepared to win at least 125 seats from the areas where voting took place in the first phase.
Ghosh further added, “The BJP is trying to misinterpret this high voter turnout. This is not a vote for change but a show of support for Mamata Banerjee’s governance. The people of Bengal have already dealt a blow to the BJP in the first phase of voting. The Trinamool Congress is ready to secure at least 125 seats, which could rise to 132-134 from the 152 assembly seats that voted in this phase.”
