New Delhi, June 7: Congress leader Rashid Alvi has urged allied parties to unite ahead of the India Alliance meeting. He emphasized that all opposition parties must come together to keep the BJP out of power.
Speaking to a news agency, Alvi stated, “I would also advise the DMK that if their goal is to oppose the Bharatiya Janata Party and keep them away from power, they should reconsider joining the India Alliance.”
He referenced Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N. Chandrababu Naidu, noting that he is now part of the NDA. Alvi pointed out that the BJP primarily operates in North India, where it has gained strength in states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Assam, where the Hindu population is significant. However, he remarked that the BJP’s influence is weaker in South India, particularly in areas with larger Muslim communities.
In response to a letter from CPI(M) to Congress, Alvi remarked that while parties may speak against each other during elections, the time has come to protect the nation and the Constitution. He appealed to regional parties, stating, “Those who left Congress should return. Otherwise, the BJP will eliminate them one by one.”
Alvi stressed the need to strengthen the India Alliance to bring about change in the upcoming 2026-27 elections.
Regarding the murder case of Sunil Pratap Chauhan in Ghaziabad and the controversial statement on ‘love jihad’ by Pandit Dhirendra Krishna Shastri, Alvi condemned the murder, insisting that the perpetrators should face the death penalty. He questioned whether the courts would deliver justice, given the instances of fake encounters in Uttar Pradesh. “When people demand encounters, I am astonished. Should we then close the courts and let the police and the Chief Minister decide who to shoot?” he asked.
Alvi also criticized the BJP’s actions concerning madrasas in West Bengal, stating, “Wherever the BJP governs, there are attacks on mosques and madrasas.”
