Mumbai, May 10: Central Minister Ramdas Athawale has responded to Akhilesh Yadav’s comments regarding the abolition of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). He stated that the Samajwadi Party leader should focus more on his party rather than worrying about the Constitution, which is safeguarded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. Athawale mentioned that if there were laws related to ballot papers, there would be no issue with that either. However, he pointed out that when the Samajwadi Party was in power, they did not raise questions about EVMs, even when they secured more seats in the Lok Sabha.
Athawale dismissed allegations made by Asaduddin Owaisi, the leader of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, who claimed that laws like the National Register of Citizens (NRC) target Muslims. Athawale asserted that there is no intention to harm any Muslim through the NRC. He emphasized that Muslims are citizens of India and possess all constitutional rights. The notion of eliminating Muslims is purely fictitious, he added, stating that Owaisi makes such claims without any basis. He insisted that Muslims benefit from all government schemes, making the idea of their elimination unfounded.
He criticized Mamata Banerjee’s call for a united opposition platform against the BJP. Athawale noted that when the BJP and NDA are in power, the opposition raises numerous questions about the Election Commission and EVMs. Conversely, when opposition parties secure more seats, they do not blame the Election Commission or EVMs. He recalled that in 2021, when Banerjee won 215 seats, they did not attribute their loss to EVMs. Athawale accused Banerjee of ruining West Bengal during her 15 years as Chief Minister, leading to widespread dissatisfaction among the populace, which was evident in the high voter turnout on election day.
Athawale mentioned that the NDA has formed governments in three out of five states. He extended an invitation to TVK leader Vijay Thalapathi to join the NDA. If he sought support from the NDA, the BJP and AIADMK alliance would back him. He noted that Tamil Nadu has elected an actor as its leader.
In response to Vijay’s swearing-in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Athawale commented on Rahul Gandhi’s participation in the ceremony, suggesting that while Gandhi may have shaken hands with Vijay, it remains uncertain when they might join forces in other ways.
