New Delhi, May 27: The Indian government is on high alert due to the rapidly changing situation in West Asia stemming from the Iran-U.S. conflict. A significant high-level meeting of the informal group of ministers (IGOM) was held on Wednesday at the Duty Bhawan in New Delhi, chaired by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh.
During the meeting, citizens were urged not to engage in panic buying of petrol, diesel, and LPG. The government reassured that the supply chain in the country remains stable. Discussions focused on the emerging security landscape in West Asia, the safety of Indian citizens, energy supply, maritime trade routes, transportation systems, and the potential impacts on essential services.
Currently, a ceasefire exists between the two nations, but tensions in the region persist. After the meeting, Rajnath Singh stated that the sixth meeting of the IGOM was convened to review the availability of essential goods and the robustness of supply chains in light of the situation in West Asia. He commended the government’s effective response under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership since the onset of the conflict.
The ministerial group expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Modi for providing visionary thinking and effective leadership during these challenging times. Singh reiterated that the supply of essential goods in the country remains normal. Citizens were again urged not to panic buy petrol, diesel, and LPG, as the government is taking all necessary steps to ensure their availability.
The meeting also reviewed the potential impacts on India’s energy needs, petroleum supply, and commercial activities if regional tensions escalate. Furthermore, discussions included the safety of Indian citizens abroad and preparations for their evacuation if necessary.
Key attendees included Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, and Union Ministers Mansukh Mandaviya, Sarbananda Sonowal, and Manohar Lal Khattar.
It is noteworthy that the Indian government is closely monitoring developments in West Asia due to the Iran-U.S. conflict. Relevant ministries and agencies have been directed to remain fully prepared for any potential emergencies, ensuring that the supply of essential goods and services in the country is not disrupted.
Experts believe that West Asia is a region of strategic and economic significance for India, as a substantial portion of its energy needs is sourced from there. Therefore, the government’s close monitoring and high-level coordination regarding the situation in the region are deemed crucial.
