New Delhi, 1 January. On the occasion of the 68th foundation day of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the scientists and staff on Thursday. He appreciated their dedication, scientific excellence, and deep sense of national duty.
DRDO celebrated its 68th foundation day on Thursday. Established in 1958, the organisation was created to strengthen India and make the country self-reliant in science and technology, especially in the defence sector.
The Defence Minister wrote in a post on X, “On DRDO Day, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all DRDO scientists, employees, and their families. Their unwavering commitment, scientific excellence, and sense of national duty are essential to strengthening India’s defence preparedness and advancing a self-reliant defence sector.”
Rajnath Singh further stated, “By developing indigenous, future-ready technology, DRDO is enhancing our strategic autonomy and boosting the confidence of our armed forces. I wish the entire DRDO family meaningful successes and a year of continued service to the nation.”
DRDO was formed in 1958 under the administration of then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru by merging the Technical Development Establishment and the Directorate of Technical Development and Production of Indian Ordnance Factories with the Defence Science Organisation.
Later, in 1979, the Defence Research and Development Service (DRDS) was created as a Group ‘A’ service of officers and scientists working directly under the administrative control of the Ministry of Defence.
With a vast network of 52 laboratories, DRDO is engaged in developing defence technologies across a broad spectrum of critical fields including aeronautics, weapons, electronics, land warfare engineering, life sciences, materials, missiles, and naval systems.
Today, it stands as India’s largest and most diverse research organisation in the defence sector.
The organisation includes around 5,000 scientists of DRDS and approximately 25,000 other subordinate scientists, technical, and supporting staff, all contributing to strengthening the country’s defence capabilities and technological self-reliance.
