Devastating Storm Hits Hawaiis Big Island: Oahu Faces Severe Flooding and Dam Threat

Honolulu, March 21: A powerful storm named ‘Kona’ struck the northern part of Oahu, Hawaii, on Friday, causing widespread destruction. Rapidly rising water levels during the night submerged roads, sweeping away numerous vehicles, with videos of the chaos quickly going viral on social media.

Hawaii’s governor reported in a press briefing on Saturday that the storm has already caused damages estimated at $1 billion. State and county officials are urging residents to remain vigilant about the storm’s dangers as the state braces for a second Kona storm within a week.

This flooding, attributed to heavy rainfall, is being described as the worst in the last 20 years. So far, over 230 individuals have been safely rescued. According to Governor Josh Green, the disaster could result in losses exceeding $1 billion (approximately ₹8,300 crores).

Local media highlighted concerns over a dam, which saw its water level rise from 79 feet to 84 feet within 24 hours—just 6 feet shy of its maximum capacity. Although water levels have slightly decreased, the risk remains if heavy rains return.

Fortunately, there have been no reported fatalities or missing persons due to this disaster. However, around 10 individuals have been hospitalized for hypothermia.

Rescue teams have been searching for stranded individuals via air and water, but drone operators have hindered some relief efforts. Officials are urging the public to assist in rescue operations.

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi noted that dozens, if not hundreds, of homes have been damaged, although a complete assessment of the situation is still pending. Approximately 5,500 residents have been ordered to evacuate to safer locations.

A relief camp set up at Waialua High and Intermediate School was also evacuated due to flooding, with residents and their pets relocated to other centers.

The weather department has issued flash flood warnings for the Haleiwa and Waialua areas of Oahu, with more rain expected in the coming days. Officials state that the situation remains extremely sensitive, with conditions changing rapidly.
