Jaipur, May 18: Rajasthan is experiencing a severe heat wave, with significant increases in daytime and nighttime temperatures across several districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for 19 districts for Monday and Tuesday, warning that maximum temperatures could soar between 42 to 45 degrees Celsius.
The highest temperature recorded in the state was 45.4 degrees Celsius in Barmer, while Sirohi saw a minimum temperature of 22.6 degrees Celsius.
According to meteorological experts, temperatures are expected to rise further this week, affecting not only western Rajasthan but also the northern and eastern regions of the state.
On Sunday, clear skies and intense sunshine prevailed throughout Rajasthan. In addition to Barmer, several other cities reported extreme temperatures. Bikaner recorded 45 degrees, Jaisalmer 44.9 degrees, Phalodi 44.8 degrees, Chittorgarh 44.6 degrees, Kota and Vansathali (Tonk) 44.2 degrees, Sri Ganganagar 44.1 degrees, Jodhpur 43.8 degrees, and Churu 43.6 degrees Celsius.
The heat is also impacting nighttime temperatures. Hanumangarh recorded the hottest night in the state, with a minimum temperature of 33.2 degrees Celsius. Chittorgarh saw 32.6 degrees, Phalodi 32.2 degrees, Barmer 32 degrees, Jodhpur 31.1 degrees, Kota 30.1 degrees, and Jaisalmer 30 degrees Celsius as minimum temperatures.
Meteorologists indicate that elevated nighttime temperatures are adding to discomfort, preventing relief from daytime heat. In Jaipur, intense sunshine persisted from morning to evening, marking the third consecutive day of rising temperatures.
In the capital, Jaipur, the maximum temperature rose by 1.3 degrees to reach 42.7 degrees Celsius, with a minimum of 28.6 degrees Celsius recorded. The IMD predicts similar conditions in Jaipur over the next 3-4 days, with temperatures likely to increase by another 1 to 2 degrees.
Kota also experienced extreme heat on Sunday, with maximum temperatures hitting 44.2 degrees and a minimum of 30.1 degrees Celsius. Between 11 AM and 4 PM, traffic on the streets significantly decreased, leaving the city nearly deserted.
To protect livestock from the heat, many gaushalas have installed coolers and are spraying water multiple times a day.
Ajmer also faced intense heat due to a heatwave, with maximum temperatures exceeding 42.4 degrees Celsius and minimum temperatures around 27 degrees Celsius. Jodhpur’s temperatures were above normal, reaching 43.8 degrees, which is 2.3 degrees higher than usual.
The meteorological department has advised the public to avoid sun exposure during the afternoon, stay hydrated, and take precautions against heatwaves, as the heat is expected to persist in the coming days.
