New Delhi: Priyank Kanungo, member of the National Human Rights Commission, addressed a recent complaint alleging that non-vegetarian food served or sold on Indian Railways is exclusively prepared from animals slaughtered by halal methods.
He stated that the issue was raised with the Railways, which clarified that there is no mandatory requirement for halal certification for the meat served on trains. Kanungo appreciated the Railways for their prompt response and timely acknowledgment, noting it reflects their accountability.
In a conversation from New Delhi, Kanungo explained that a formal notice was sent to the Railways seeking clarification on whether the contractors and suppliers providing meat to railway catering services follow halal methods or the ‘jhatka’ method of slaughter. This inquiry is significant because, as per Darul Uloom Deoband, only Muslims are permitted to perform halal slaughter.
Being a government agency, the Railways must clearly inform passengers about the method of meat preparation. The jhatka method, practised by Hindus and some Dalit communities, is also widely used. Ensuring the availability of all types of meat respects the livelihood rights of diverse communities.
Kanungo further mentioned that the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has also been issued a notice to consider specifying whether meat products sold in India are suitable for all religious groups or if any restrictions apply. Such clarity is essential for consumer awareness.
He highlighted that the Sikh community, another minority group in India, follows specific religious guidelines under Article 24 of their sacred text, which prohibits consuming meat prepared by Islamic halal methods. Serving such meat unknowingly to Sikhs would infringe upon their religious beliefs and constitute a violation of human rights.
