New Delhi, February 24: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi will travel to Bhopal on Tuesday to lead a significant protest against the interim India-US trade deal. The party claims that this framework opens the door for cheap US imports, severely harming Indian farmers.

Jitu Patwari, President of the Madhya Pradesh Congress, announced the visit, stating, “On February 24, 2026, in Bhopal, Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi will raise their voices for the rights and entitlements of farmers facing injustice due to the India-US trade deal.”

In a media briefing, Patwari accused the government of succumbing to US pressure, asserting that the deal has already led to a drop in prices for key crops such as soybeans, cotton, and maize.

He described the agreement as a forced compromise, likening it to a sword hanging over the farmers’ heads, directly impacting soybean, maize, and cotton farmers across Madhya Pradesh.

Patwari emphasized that the February 24 event reflects the party’s commitment to fighting for farmers nationwide. The protest will take the form of a farmers’ conference in Bhopal, initiating a targeted campaign across vulnerable states including Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Bihar.

Providing details about the ‘Kisan Mahapanchayat’ to be held at Atal Path in the Jawahar Chowk area, Mukesh Nayak, Congress’s media in-charge in Madhya Pradesh, informed the news agency that over 100,000 farmers are expected to participate.

Nayak stated that the event will commence around 2 PM with the arrival of Kharge and Gandhi in Bhopal. He also mentioned that two large domes have been set up at the venue, featuring a significant stage arrangement for approximately 250 leaders and office bearers.

He added, “The farmers’ conference in Bhopal will be crucial for Congress workers and will spark a movement for change in Madhya Pradesh. The people of Madhya Pradesh are fed up with over 20 years of BJP corruption and chaos.”

Congress MLA Umang Singhar, who serves as the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the state, noted that soybean farmers may face lower prices due to imports, while cotton farmers in the Malwa and Nimar regions could also suffer losses.

Singhar remarked, “The farmers’ conference is being organized to support farmers and raise awareness about the ‘farmer-unfriendly impact’ of the trade deal.”
