New Delhi, March 10: Raghav Chadha, a Rajya Sabha MP from the Aam Aadmi Party, raised concerns about the high cost of food at airports on Monday. He urged the government to expand the ‘Flight Passenger Cafe’ initiative to all airports across the country.
Chadha highlighted that air travelers have long complained about the exorbitant prices of food at airports. While he appreciated the government’s initiative to establish these cafes at select airports, he emphasized the need for broader implementation and improvements.
Currently, there are over 150 airports in India, but the Flight Passenger Cafes are only available at 10 to 12 of them. Chadha called for the expansion of this initiative to ensure affordable food and beverages for passengers at every airport nationwide.
He stressed the importance of placing these cafes in the departure area after check-in and security checks, where passengers typically wait the longest before boarding their flights. According to him, travelers are more likely to purchase snacks or tea during this waiting period.
Presently, these cafes are located only in the pre-check-in area, before security checks. Ideally, they should be situated in the departure area post-security to facilitate easier access for passengers.
Chadha further noted that limited counters at various locations often lead to long queues. Additionally, restricted menu options and capacity constraints hinder accessibility for travelers.
In urging the government to address these concerns, he requested the establishment of Flight Passenger Cafes at all major and minor airports, particularly in areas after check-in and security checks.
He asserted that affordable food at airports should not be considered a luxury but rather a basic necessity for travelers. Chadha emphasized the need to make air travel more passenger-friendly and accessible.
It is worth noting that the Flight Passenger Cafe initiative was launched in February 2026, aiming to provide travelers at Indian airports with affordable snacks and beverages (with prices like tea/water at 10 rupees and coffee/snacks at 20 rupees) to tackle the issue of high food prices.
