Washington, June 4: The United States, India, Japan, and Australia are moving beyond mere diplomatic discussions. They are now engaging in practical initiatives related to maritime security, infrastructure, and regional resilience. This statement was made by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
During a congressional hearing on Wednesday, Rubio highlighted that the Quad has become a crucial pillar in the Trump administration’s Indo-Pacific strategy. His remarks indicate that the Quad is now playing a more action-oriented role in the Indo-Pacific region. He noted that the group has already held several meetings and plans to conduct more high-level discussions later this year.
Rubio mentioned his recent participation in a meeting of Quad foreign ministers in India. He emphasized that the four nations are not just talking but are actively working on concrete, implementable projects.
He stated, “We now have specific tasks to focus on.”
One significant proposal aims to enhance maritime domain awareness, which involves better monitoring of activities at sea. The goal is to strengthen oversight of ship movements, potential threats, and critical maritime routes in the Indo-Pacific.
Rubio explained that the four countries are pooling their resources to improve surveillance of maritime activities. This includes monitoring suspicious activities, attempts to evade sanctions, and threats to vital structures like undersea cables.
He added that if these four nations collaborate effectively, it would benefit the entire region.
Additionally, the Quad countries are discussing infrastructure projects in the Pacific Islands. Rubio revealed that plans are underway to construct a new port on a small island in the region, with discussions also taking place with Fiji.
According to Rubio, the Quad’s partnership will increasingly focus on achieving practical outcomes to strengthen the region and reduce vulnerabilities.
When asked about future meetings, he expressed that the U.S. administration hopes to convene a meeting of Quad leaders before the end of the year.
The Quad has now emerged as a vital strategic group in the Indo-Pacific, comprising four major democratic nations working together on issues like maritime security, supply chains, regional stability, and the growing influence of China.
