Thane, 2 January: Punjab Police conducted a major operation late Thursday night in Mira Bhayandar, Maharashtra. Four accused were arrested in connection with an online fraud case involving former IG Amar Singh Chahal, with the amount defrauded estimated at Rs 8 crore. The accused include a local BJP leader. The investigation is ongoing.
Former IG Amar Singh Chahal attempted suicide on 22 December after discovering the Rs 8 crore fraud. Patiala Police took over the case and froze Rs 3 crore from Chahal’s bank accounts. Additionally, 25 accounts linked to the fraud network were sealed to stop transactions. The probe revealed that the accused operated a network from Maharashtra. Four suspects have been identified, with the gang believed to include a total of 10 members. The accounts used for transferring money from Chahal were opened in the names of poor labourers.
Amar Singh Chahal was previously an officer in the Air Force, retiring in 1990. He later joined as a direct DSP and rose to the position of IG. After retirement, he resided in Patiala with his family. He became involved with a WhatsApp group through which he was trapped by fraudsters. Chahal invested not only his savings but also borrowed money from relatives into the scheme. Upon realising the Rs 8 crore had been cheated, he attempted suicide at home, leaving behind a 12-page suicide note detailing the entire scam.
During the investigation, a special team from Punjab Police visited Navghar Police Station. Under the leadership of Vasai Virar Police Commissioner Niket Kaushik, Patiala Police conducted raids in the Navghar area of Bhayandar and arrested four suspects late at night. Among the arrested is Ranjit (Shera Thakur), who serves as the Mandal President of the BJP Bhayandar Navghar Youth Front.
The investigation is still underway, and further significant disclosures are expected in the coming days.
