Consumer Goods Retail Sales in China Rise by 2.8% in January-February: Ministry of Commerce

Beijing, March 20: According to the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, total retail sales of consumer goods reached 8.61 trillion yuan during January and February this year. This marks a 2.8% increase compared to the same period last year.

Consumer spending has shown overall strength. Retail sales of goods increased by 2.5% during these months. Sales of daily necessities surged, while the demand for advanced and high-quality products remained consistently strong.

The festive period also boosted consumption. During the Spring Festival holidays, the average daily sales of major retail and catering enterprises across the country increased by 5.7% compared to the same period last year. Additionally, experiential consumption saw a significant rise, with retail sales in the services sector growing by 5.6%.

There is particularly strong demand for smart and eco-friendly products, reflecting a growing awareness of green development and technological advancement. Notably, consumption growth in rural areas outpaced that in urban regions. During this period, retail sales of consumer goods in urban areas rose by 2.7%, while in rural areas, the increase was 3.2%, exceeding the urban growth rate by 0.5 percentage points.
