
Chandigarh, April 19: The Punjab government has recently passed the ‘Jagat Jyoti Shri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Bill 2026’ in the assembly, aimed at taking stringent action against cases related to the disrespect of Guru Granth Sahib. This bill has now become law after receiving approval from Governor Gulab Chand Kataria. Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann expressed heartfelt gratitude to the community for their support.
In a post on the social media platform X, Chief Minister Mann stated that Governor Gulab Chand Kataria has signed the bill passed in the assembly against the disrespect of Guru Granth Sahib. He thanked Waheguru for this service, expressing gratitude on behalf of himself, a common man.
It is noteworthy that the Jagat Jyoti Shri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Bill 2026 was passed in the Punjab assembly on April 13 with unanimous consent from all parties. The bill aims to prevent incidents that lead to the disrespect of religious texts and create social unrest.
The amended law includes very strict provisions. If an individual is found guilty of disrespecting Guru Granth Sahib, they will face life imprisonment, meaning the offender will remain behind bars until death. Additionally, there is a provision for heavy fines of up to 2.5 million rupees.
The bill also clarifies that only a gazetted officer or higher-ranking official will be authorized to investigate such cases. Furthermore, the law does not allow for any kind of settlement or compromise in these matters.
The government asserts that this law will send a strong message to society that any negligence or disrespect related to religious sentiments will not be tolerated.
