New Delhi, April 19: The failure to pass the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha has sparked sharp criticism from Pappu Yadav, a Member of Parliament from Purnia, and Congress leader Pramod Tiwari, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address. Opposition leaders have framed this as a victory for democracy and the Constitution, raising concerns about the central government’s commitment to women’s reservation and social justice.
In an interview with a news agency, MP Pappu Yadav stated, “The Congress and all opposition leaders have saved the country’s democracy. We have protected the Constitution and ensured the participation of poor women, women from the general category, and those from SC, ST, and OBC communities. They want to eliminate this participation forever. The opposition has safeguarded their political freedom.”
Yadav further questioned, “How much drama have they created? In 2023, all parties discussed women’s issues. Who granted women the right to vote? Who worked to eliminate social evils? Who provided scholarships, pensions, Indira Awas, widow pensions, and old-age pensions for women? Who introduced the rights to employment, health, and food? Who implemented women’s empowerment in Panchayati Raj rules? Who brought these laws? Today, the highest number of women in the Panchayati Raj system is due to Rajiv Gandhi. What contribution have they made to women’s progress?”
Congress MP Pramod Tiwari added, “I want to be very clear. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, your party is deceiving the public. Under the guise of women’s reservation, you are undermining the Constitution and the federal structure of India. The public is becoming aware of this, and no one is falling for your tricks anymore.”
Regarding the Prime Minister’s address, Tiwari remarked, “The Prime Minister claims that 50 percent of seats would increase. I challenge him to show us in his bill where it states that every assembly will have 50 percent more seats. All parties had written to you requesting to postpone the meeting by ten days due to elections in Tamil Nadu and Bengal. Why did you call the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha sessions, if not for electoral stunts? We had already supported the Women’s Reservation Bill back in 2023.”
