Patiala, March 29: The passing of senior Congress leader and former minister Sardar Lal Singh has cast a shadow over Punjab’s political landscape. MLA Kulbir Jira expressed profound sorrow over Singh’s death, stating that Punjab has suffered an irreparable loss.
Kulbir Jira remarked that Sardar Lal Singh was a pillar of the Congress party. He played a crucial role in mentoring numerous young individuals from ordinary households, guiding them into politics. Reflecting on their relationship, Jira noted that Singh was his mentor.
He recounted a memorable incident when Singh shared his experiences from the 1977 elections while they were in his office. Singh had recounted how he won the election from Dakala by a mere 528 votes, a victory that drew the attention of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who visited the area to understand the Congress candidate’s success.
Jira stated, “The loss of a great personality like Sardar Lal Singh is not just a tragedy for his family but for the entire Congress party and the state of Punjab. Such individuals are rare, serving as guiding lights for society.”
He further emphasized that Singh conducted his political career with integrity, humility, and determination. The ideals and principles he established continue to inspire young leaders today. Jira urged society to follow the path that Singh had shown.
Sardar Lal Singh was a former MLA from the Dakala region and was affectionately known as the ‘Patriarch’ of Punjab politics. He dedicated decades to public service, particularly focusing on issues related to farmers and rural development. His simplicity and hard work endeared him to the public. Singh had been in poor health for some time and passed away today. Upon news of his death, a stream of leaders arrived at his residence to share their condolences with the family.
The Punjab Congress also issued a statement mourning his passing, declaring that Singh’s departure is a significant loss for the entire party. His last rites will be conducted tomorrow.
