Chennai, March 29: The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) has released a list of 10 candidates for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The party aims to balance experience, legacy, and the new generation in its selections.
Prominent on the list is party General Secretary Premalatha Vijayakant, who is contesting from the Vridhachalam seat. This seat has historical ties to the late party founder Vijayakant, affectionately known as “Captain.” This decision is viewed as a strategy to strengthen the party’s connection to its roots and traditional voter base.
In a nod to the new generation, the party has fielded youth wing secretary V. Vijay Prabhakaran from the Virudhunagar seat. He is the son of Premalatha and Vijayakant, and his candidacy is seen as a balance between continuity and change within the party.
Other notable candidates include V. Elangovan (Dharmapuri), former MLA R. Mohanraj (Salem West), A.R. Elangovan (Omalur), L. Venkatesan (Mylam), D. Murugesan (Pallavaram), D. Krishnamurthy (Tiruttani), K.B. Prathab (Gudiyatham), and T.P. Saravanan (Polur).
The DMDK will contest these 10 seats under the leadership of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, where it plays the role of an ally.
According to party leaders, all candidates will campaign under the traditional “Murasu” (drum) election symbol, which is a significant emblem of the party’s identity.
Political analysts believe the selection of candidates reflects a balance between experienced leaders and new faces, aiming to leverage Vijayakant’s legacy. The party has also adopted a strategy to strengthen its hold in key areas by focusing on a limited number of seats.
