Chandigarh, March 28: Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar expressed gratitude on Friday for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s significant decision aimed at providing relief to the public amid rising global fuel prices.
The excise duty on petrol has been reduced from ₹13 to ₹3 per liter, while the ₹10 duty on diesel has been completely removed. Tensions in the Middle East have caused crude oil prices to surge from approximately $70 per barrel to nearly $122 per barrel over the past month.
As a result, petrol and diesel prices have risen significantly worldwide, with increases of 30 to 50 percent in Southeast Asia, around 30 percent in North America, 20 percent in Europe, and nearly 50 percent in Africa. During this period, India has emerged as an exception.
Jakhar stated that the government faced two options in such challenging circumstances: either raise prices like other countries and burden the public or absorb the financial pressure to provide relief. The Modi government chose the latter option to protect citizens from global inflation.
He emphasized that the Prime Minister understands the difficulties faced by the common people and knows how to address them effectively. The state BJP president further noted that this move would also reduce the heavy losses incurred by oil companies while ensuring that the public does not face any additional burden. By significantly cutting tax revenues, the government has prioritized public welfare.
