In a tragic turn of events, an old bridge over the Indrayani River in the Kundmala area of Pune’s Maval region collapsed on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of at least six people and leaving many others feared drowned. The incident occurred amid heavy weekend tourist traffic, with as many as 30 people believed to have been swept away by the river’s current.
Overcrowded Bridge Gives Way Amid Sunday Rush
The accident took place around 3:40 PM, when a large number of people had gathered on the old bridge to enjoy the scenic view of the fast-flowing Indrayani River. Many were clicking photos and standing close to the edge when a portion of the bridge suddenly gave way. Eyewitnesses reported a loud cracking sound, followed by chaos as people fell into the water or onto nearby rocks.
Among the casualties are children, according to MLA Sunil Shelke, who confirmed that six bodies have been recovered so far. Rescue teams have pulled six people from the river alive, but several others remain missing.
Rescue Operations in Full Swing
Emergency response teams, including ambulances, fire brigades, cranes, and divers, rushed to the site immediately after the collapse. A massive rescue operation led by local authorities and supported by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is currently underway.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed deep sorrow over the incident, confirming injuries and the possibility of more casualties. He assured the public that all necessary steps are being taken to assist the affected families and rescue the missing.
In a statement posted on social media, Fadnavis extended condolences to the victims’ families, stating, “It is extremely painful to hear about the collapse of the bridge over the Indrayani River near Talegaon in Pune district. According to preliminary information, two people have died. We extend our heartfelt condolences and are with the grieving families.”
Bridge Was in Dilapidated Condition
Initial reports suggest that the bridge was in a severely deteriorated condition and may not have been equipped to handle the crowd it received on weekends. At the time of the collapse, not only were there pedestrians on the bridge, but also two-wheelers and motorcycles, exceeding its safe load capacity.
The location of the accident, Kundmala, is about 30 kilometers from Pune city and lies on the way to Mumbai, just before the expressway. It’s a popular spot for local tourists, especially during weekends and holidays.
Government Faces Questions Over Infrastructure Negligence
The accident has sparked outrage and concern over the condition of public infrastructure in Maharashtra. Locals allege that despite the bridge’s deteriorating state, no significant repair or reinforcement work had been carried out.
Authorities have promised a full investigation to determine accountability and whether warning signs or restrictions were ignored. Questions are also being raised about crowd management and the lack of preventive action despite visible structural concerns.
Families in Grief, Search Continues
As rescue operations continue into the night, dozens of anxious family members and friends of the missing have gathered near the site, hoping for good news. The number of casualties could rise as more bodies are recovered or identified.
The government has dispatched a senior minister to the scene and has assured compensation and support for the families of the victims. The situation remains tense, with officials urging the public to stay away from the site to allow emergency crews to work without obstruction.
