Protest Erupts in Patna as Students Demand Resignation of Chief Election Commissioner

Patna, October 13 (Daily Kiran) : A significant protest unfolded in Patna on Tuesday as members of the All India Students Association (AISA) and other groups rallied at Lok Bhawan. The demonstration was aimed at opposing the Special Intensive Review (SIR) process and calling for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Tensions escalated when students attempted to breach police barricades at JP Golambar. In response, law enforcement struggled to maintain control, resulting in a standoff between officers and demonstrators. Reports indicate that several protesters were taken into custody during the unrest.

The students initially gathered at Gate Number 10 of Gandhi Maidan, intending to march towards Lok Bhawan. However, a heavy police presence prevented them from advancing for an extended period. Subsequently, traffic was halted on the road from Ram Gulam Chowk to JP Golambar, with barricades erected to deter the demonstrators.

Despite police efforts, the protesters pushed forward, toppling barricades as they attempted to reach Dak Bungalow. This led to further confrontations, with officers trying to push the crowd back. The atmosphere remained chaotic, with students chanting slogans against Gyanesh Kumar and the government.

Many participants carried placards expressing their discontent, demanding the Chief Election Commissioner’s resignation while questioning the SIR process. To prevent the march from reaching Lok Bhawan, police enforced stringent security measures.

Prior to the protest, the Patna district administration had issued guidelines regarding demonstrations. The directives from the District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police emphasized using designated areas for protests, warning that unauthorized gatherings could disrupt traffic and inconvenience the public.

Authorities highlighted that such protests could interfere with the operations of essential services, including schools, hospitals, and courts, potentially hindering access for the elderly, the sick, and emergency vehicles. The district administration urged all organizations to express their demands peacefully at the designated protest site and warned of legal action against those violating these instructions.
