Guwahati, February 19: Congress Screening Committee Chair and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will arrive in Assam on Thursday for a two-day visit to oversee the party’s preparations for the upcoming assembly elections.
According to party leaders, Priyanka will begin her visit with prayers at the Kamakhya Temple, followed by a trip to the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee headquarters, Rajiv Bhawan. She will participate in screening meetings starting at 11 AM and discussions are expected to continue late into the night.
The formal announcement of this visit was made during a press conference addressed by AICC General Secretary in charge of Assam, Jitendra Singh, and APCC President Gaurav Gogoi.
Jitendra Singh stated that the screening committee, led by Priyanka, will engage with block Congress leaders, representatives from frontal organizations, and grassroots party workers as part of the candidate selection process. He described this initiative as the first of its kind in the state, emphasizing the structured nature of the screening process. He also indicated that Priyanka would return to Assam multiple times before the elections to gauge public sentiment and strengthen organizational coordination.
Gogoi mentioned that the party aims to complete the screening process as quickly as possible. He suggested that the first phase of the Congress candidates’ list could be released by the end of February after consultations with the central leadership.
He stressed that the Congress is ahead in its election preparations and confirmed ongoing discussions about alliances with like-minded opposition parties.
Targeting Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Gogoi accused him of losing the moral right to comment on “Hindu leadership” and questioned his position amid allegations related to land and livestock syndicates. He also referenced recent political developments involving senior leaders, claiming attempts are being made to divert public attention from issues such as the alleged 12,000 bigha land connected to the Chief Minister’s family.
