Washington, March 15: Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has raised alarms about the impact of President Donald Trump’s administration on public trust in American institutions. He asserts that the politicization of the Justice Department could have long-lasting effects on the nation’s legal framework.
During a discussion on the podcast “The Fifth Column,” Christie expressed concern that the current political climate is damaging the foundational institutions of American democracy.
He stated, “The most destructive aspect of this administration is what it has done to the Justice Department. I don’t think there’s anything else that comes close.”
Having served as New Jersey’s governor twice, Christie warned that if the public perceives prosecutions as politically motivated, it could severely undermine trust in the rule of law.
He remarked, “If people come to believe that a prosecutor’s decisions are determined by their party rather than the facts, how will that trust ever be restored?”
According to Christie, restoring the credibility of the Justice Department will require significant time and political effort. He believes that a complete overhaul could take at least two terms.
Christie noted that the current environment is also affecting the courts, where judges are no longer accepting government claims as readily as before.
He criticized the internal politics of the Republican Party, stating that many leaders publicly support Trump out of fear of political retribution.
“It’s less about Trump and more about the fear of Trump. This fear is not personal; it’s political,” he explained.
Christie pointed out that many Republican leaders worry that opposing Trump could lead to support for another candidate against them in primary elections, jeopardizing their political careers.
Despite his criticisms, Christie indicated he is not ready to leave the Republican Party, even as it has changed significantly in recent years.
He noted that loyalty to Trump is becoming the primary basis for the party, rather than adherence to principles.
It is worth mentioning that Christie was the head of Trump’s presidential transition team in 2016 but later became one of Trump’s most vocal Republican critics.
