President Murmu Advocates for Collaborative Policing in Sikkim

Gangtok, May 28: President Droupadi Murmu awarded the ‘President’s Badge’ to the Sikkim Police on Thursday in Gangtok. During the ceremony, she congratulated all past and present officials and personnel of the Sikkim Police for their dedication. Established in 1897, this police force has worked tirelessly to ensure peace, security, and justice in Sikkim.

President Murmu highlighted the long-standing impact of colonial rule on India’s policing system. During the era of oppression, the police’s primary role was not to serve the public but to control them and enforce government orders harshly. This led to a mindset of subjugation within the police force, which prioritized governance over community support. However, she noted that this mentality is gradually changing.

She emphasized the necessity of completely freeing the nation from this colonial mindset to empower citizens. Only then can they contribute significantly to achieving the goal of a developed India. The President stressed the importance of transparency and accountability within the police system.

She stated that the police should be more citizen-friendly, allowing individuals to report issues without fear. Special attention should be given to vulnerable groups, including women and children.

President Murmu called for the police to become allies and guides for citizens. By adopting a collaborative role, trust between the public and police will grow. When the police understand and assist with community issues, respect for law and order will also increase. She reiterated that the police’s purpose should not only be to apprehend criminals but also to foster a safe and aware society.

The President expressed her satisfaction with the significant role the Sikkim Police has played in maintaining peace and brotherhood in the region. Their professional and friendly conduct has earned the affection and respect of the people of Sikkim.
