Premium Lychee from Uttarakhand Sets Sail for Italy, Boosting Farmers Income

New Delhi, June 20: The Modi government is making continuous efforts to enhance farmers’ income. In this context, the first shipment of premium lychee from Uttarakhand has been dispatched from Dehradun to Italy. This information was shared by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on Friday.

The ministry stated that the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) assisted in exporting the first batch of fresh Uttarakhand lychee to Italy on Thursday. This achievement symbolizes the entry of Uttarakhand’s premium lychee into the European market and reflects the growing international acceptance of India’s high-quality fresh fruits.

The first shipment consisted of one metric ton of fresh lychee, showcasing the export potential of Uttarakhand’s horticultural sector. This shipment is expected to strengthen India’s presence in international fresh fruit markets and promote premium products from the Himalayan region.

Dehradun lychee is renowned for its distinctive sweetness, attractive red color, delightful aroma, and excellent pulp quality. The region is known for famous varieties such as Rose Scented, Kalakattia, and Bedana. The favorable agro-climatic conditions in districts like Dehradun, Haridwar, Nainital, and Udham Singh Nagar significantly contribute to the high quality and popularity of this fruit in the market.

The ministry noted that as a result of this export initiative, producers are receiving better profits, with farmers earning approximately 25% more than domestic market prices. This development is expected to encourage the widespread adoption of quality production practices and greater participation in export-oriented horticulture.

Exporting Uttarakhand lychee to Italy marks a significant step towards diversifying export destinations for India’s fresh fruits. It reinforces the country’s reputation as a reliable supplier of premium horticultural products.

According to the ministry, APEDA continues to advance India’s agricultural export agenda through market development initiatives, quality assurance mechanisms, infrastructural support, and capacity-building programs aimed at enhancing farmers’ access to high-value international markets.
