Premier of Chinas First Tap Dance Drama Tashi Shyachuo Takes Center Stage

Beijing, March 31: The premiere of China’s first tap dance drama, “Tashi Shyachuo,” took place on March 28 and 29 at the Central Opera House in Beijing. This production not only showcases the national intangible cultural heritage of Lhatsé Tui Shyei dance but also narrates a story of mutual cooperation and brotherhood among various ethnic groups in Tibet, performed by artists from Beijing and Tibet.

In Tibetan, “Tashi Shyachuo” translates to “Auspicious Dance,” featuring two main characters named Tashi and Shyachuo. The drama reflects a deep friendship between two generations and presents a poignant tale of collaboration and fraternity among the diverse ethnic groups in Tibet in this new era.

Tui Shyei is a form of Tibetan tap dance, with a history spanning over 700 years, making it one of the most representative folk dances of Tibet.

Notably, March 28 marks the anniversary of the liberation of one million serfs in Tibet. Wei Tong, the director of the dance drama and head of the Lhasa Song and Dance Troupe, emphasized the significance of premiering the production on this date.

Following its debut, the dance drama plans to tour various locations across China and explore international opportunities, aiming to share the story of Tibet’s development in the new era through cultural exchange.
