There have been no immediate reports of damage or injuries. Authorities are currently evaluating the risk of a tsunami following the earthquake. The Drake Passage is a body of water connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, known for its rough seas and seismic activity.

In a separate incident on August 17, a magnitude 5.8 undersea earthquake struck the eastern side of Indonesia, injuring 29 people, including two critically. The quake occurred 15 kilometres north of Poso district in Central Sulawesi and was followed by at least 15 aftershocks. Indonesian authorities did not issue a tsunami warning.

Last month, a massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake shook Russia’s eastern Kamchatka region, triggering tsunami warnings across the Pacific. The quake was one of the most powerful ever recorded in modern history, striking about 74 miles off the coast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at a depth of 13 miles. Tsunami waves reached up to 13.1 feet in Russia, 4.9 feet in Japan, and 5.7 feet in Hawaii.

Authorities continue to monitor seismic activity in these regions to ensure the safety of residents and travellers.
