New Delhi, August 31: The indigenous diving support vessel ‘Nipun’ has officially joined the naval fleet on Monday. This vessel is specifically designed for deep-sea diving and underwater missions. It can also assist submarines in distress. The induction ceremony was attended by Navy Chief Admiral Krishna Swaminathan.
Unlike conventional vessels that operate on the surface, ‘Nipun’ extends its capabilities to the ocean’s depths. It is equipped with advanced diving systems that support divers for extended periods, even in challenging marine conditions. Whether investigating suspicious objects underwater or conducting other missions, ‘Nipun’ is prepared for all scenarios. This modern vessel significantly enhances the Indian Navy’s submarine rescue capabilities, playing a crucial role in emergencies.
‘Nipun’ will provide support for divers and underwater rescue operations. The vessel features specialized facilities for diving, underwater intervention, and medical assistance. It was formally inducted into the naval fleet at Mumbai’s naval dockyard.
During the ceremony, Admiral Krishna Swaminathan emphasized that combat readiness is the Navy’s top priority, especially in an increasingly challenging maritime environment. He stated that this vessel strengthens operational command capabilities above waves, on the surface, and underwater. Weighing approximately 9,000 tons, ‘Nipun’ boasts several unique capabilities. The Navy Chief noted that submarine rescue missions require high levels of preparedness, allowing little room for delays. This vessel will significantly enhance India’s capacity to assist distressed submarines.
He also mentioned that ‘Nipun’s’ specialized diving capabilities could aid allied nations in underwater debris removal and rescue missions. The Western Naval Command will now focus on integrating INS Nipun into operational plans, conducting extensive exercises, and developing proficiency in its specialized systems. This is the second diving support vessel of the Nistar class.
According to the Navy, ‘Nipun’ is equipped with modern navigation and vessel management systems, ensuring precise positioning. This feature will be beneficial during complex underwater operations. The vessel can maintain its position at sea while continuously supporting divers. Notably, ‘Nipun’ was entirely designed and built in India by Hindustan Shipyard Limited in Visakhapatnam, marking a significant achievement for India’s defense shipbuilding capabilities.
The vessel’s insignia features a whale and a modern diving helmet, symbolizing the ability to reach great ocean depths and remain submerged for extended periods. The diving helmet represents the divers themselves. The induction of ‘Nipun’ will bolster India’s maritime security capabilities, especially in deep-sea diving, underwater intervention, and submarine rescue operations.
