Political Turmoil in Maharashtra: NCP Faces Allegations of Opposition Defection Attempts

Mumbai, July 15: Political discussions surrounding the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) are intensifying in Maharashtra. Leaders from Congress and Shiv Sena have made contrasting statements regarding the situation. Congress leader Nana Patole has accused opposition parties of attempting to poach their MPs and MLAs, while Shiv Sena leaders have described it as a matter of political decorum and an internal party issue.

In response to a post by Congress MP P. Chidambaram, Maharashtra Congress leader Nana Patole stated, “Whether it’s Sharad Pawar’s party, DMK, or Shiv Sena (UBT), efforts are being made to weaken them.” He expressed concern over the unclear intentions behind these attempts.

Patole referenced the slogan ‘400 Par’ used during the Lok Sabha elections, suggesting it indicated a desire to amend the Constitution. He noted that a BJP MP had also hinted at such changes, alleging that there is an effort to undermine political parties to alter the constitutional framework. “This is the reality of the current political situation,” he asserted.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant commented on the ongoing speculation regarding the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction). He remarked, “Understanding Sharad Pawar is not easy. This is an internal matter of his party, and only he can clarify the final position. I have also spoken with NCP MP Supriya Sule, who denied any such possibilities.”

Additionally, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Deshmukh stated, “No political message should be interpreted from this. Sharad Pawar is a senior and respected leader in the country, and welcoming him is part of Maharashtra’s tradition and Indian culture. Respecting senior leaders is not a political act but a matter of decorum. It is inappropriate to politicize such behavior.”

Shiv Sena spokesperson Krishna Hegde also responded to the ongoing discussions about the NCP. He mentioned, “Some NCP legislators have met with the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, but no official announcement regarding joining the NDA has been made yet. Either the concerned legislators will provide information, or Sharad Pawar himself will clarify the situation.” Hegde characterized this as an internal matter of the NCP and declined to comment further.
