Tehran, July 31: The Iranian military has claimed responsibility for drone attacks targeting American facilities at the Sheikh Isa Air Base in southern Bahrain.
According to a report by the Xinhua News Agency, the Iranian military stated in a release on its website that the attacks, which occurred on Thursday, aimed at US military power generators, navigation systems, and various buildings on the base.
Earlier in the day, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran announced that it had conducted strikes on US positions at Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait and Al Azraq Air Base in Jordan, in retaliation for recent American attacks against Iran.
These latest skirmishes follow a brief pause in hostilities between the US and Iran. Prior to the ceasefire, the United States had launched multiple attacks on Iranian targets, claiming they were in response to Iranian assaults on ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The US stated that the objective was to diminish Iran’s capability to threaten commercial vessels. In retaliation, Iran targeted American military bases and installations across the region with missile and drone strikes.
In previous statements, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif emphasized the importance of preventing the use of military bases in Bulgaria and Cyprus for attacks against Iran. During a phone call with Bulgarian Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva, Zarif condemned the deployment of US tanker aircraft at Bezmer Air Base as a violation of international law and bilateral relations.
Zaharieva responded by stating that Bulgaria has no intention of participating in any conflict against Iran and supports diplomatic efforts to reduce regional tensions.
In a separate conversation with Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, Zarif stressed the need to prevent the misuse of foreign bases in Cyprus for aggression against Iran. Kombos confirmed that Cyprus has reached out to the UK to ensure that British bases in the area are not used against any country.
