Chennai, July 19: A fierce political debate has erupted between the ruling Tamilaga Vetrikazhagam (TVK) and the opposition leader, Edappadi K. Palaniswami, following his allegations against the Tamil Nadu government. Palaniswami accused the government of failing to protect innocent lives and attempting to silence victims’ families through compensation.
He claimed that within just 60 days of taking office, the TVK government has begun valuing human lives. Referring to recent controversies surrounding deaths in Nagercoil and Puzhal jail, he asserted that the government is trying to quell public outrage by offering compensation instead of ensuring justice and accountability.
Palaniswami further stated that the people of Tamil Nadu are suffering under the new administration, likening their plight to “escaping the grip of an elephant only to fall into the jaws of a crocodile.” He urged the government to govern responsibly and meet the expectations of voters who demanded political change.
In response, the TVK launched a vigorous counterattack through its IT wing, labeling Palaniswami’s criticism as akin to “preaching the truth of the devil.” The party accused the AIADMK leadership of lacking the moral authority to speak about clean governance, arguing that those who have done anything for political power are now pretending to advocate for ethical politics.
The ruling party also reminded the public of the custodial deaths in Sathankulam during the AIADMK’s tenure, questioning whether the people of Tamil Nadu have forgotten that incident. The TVK contended that the AIADMK is in no position to lecture the current government on justice, law and order, or human rights protection.
Additionally, the TVK objected to comments that downplay the influence of cinema in politics. The party stated that any attempt by the AIADMK to mock the role of cinema is an insult to its two most prominent leaders, former Chief Ministers M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) and J. Jayalalithaa, who both transitioned from successful film careers to significant political positions.
Concluding their statement, the TVK emphasized that the public is closely monitoring the attacks, which they described as politically motivated assaults on a Chief Minister committed to corruption-free governance.
This incident marks another escalation in the bitter political rivalry between the ruling TVK and the main opposition party, AIADMK.
