Chennai, July 19: The Tambaram Municipal Corporation (TMC) in Tamil Nadu has initiated the first phase of India’s 2027 Census. This phase includes the launch of an online self-enumeration process, allowing residents to provide their information digitally. A comprehensive house-listing survey is also set to begin on August 1.
Residents can complete the self-enumeration process between July 17 and July 31 using mobile phones, tablets, or computers via the official census portal. This online option enables families to submit their details in advance, reducing the time required for field verification and enhancing data accuracy.
S. Balachander, the Commissioner and Chief Census Officer of Tambaram Corporation, stated that families completing the online process will receive an 11-digit Self-Enumeration (SE) ID via SMS or email. Residents are advised to keep this ID safe and present it to census officials upon their visit.
To ensure comprehensive coverage, the corporation has deployed 1,483 enumerators and 243 supervisors across its jurisdiction. The field staff will conduct the survey from August 1 to August 30, covering every residential and commercial building within the corporation’s limits.
The corporation has established 1,483 house-listing blocks, each containing approximately 150 to 200 families, to facilitate organized coverage. During the survey, enumerators will verify the information provided through the self-enumeration portal and gather data from families that have not registered online.
Officials emphasized that the house-listing process is a crucial component of the 2027 Census, as it creates a database of buildings and families for future population counting.
Commissioner Balachander urged residents to cooperate fully with enumerators and provide accurate information. He warned that providing false information, obstructing census officials, or tampering with census markings on buildings is punishable under the Census Act.
Residents are also advised to prepare basic household information to streamline the verification process when officials arrive. The second phase of the 2027 Census, which involves counting individuals, will take place in February 2027, following the completion of house-listing and housing enumeration across the country.
