Bagalkot, September 4 (Daily Kiran) : Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar visited Bagalkot on September 4 to assess the severe drought affecting local agriculture. He noted that crops in the areas he toured were struggling to grow properly. During his visit, he examined fields across four taluks in the district and expressed concern for farmers facing significant losses.
In Shirur village, Shivakumar pointed out that crops such as sunflower, chili, horse gram, and pigeon pea have suffered extensive damage. “I have visited four taluks in Bagalkot, and there are no healthy crops to be found. Some farmers, who have cultivated 20 to 30 acres, claim they have crop insurance. I will discuss the situation with officials and legislators to explore possible relief measures,” he stated.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the government is evaluating drought conditions in areas that have not yet been officially declared drought-stricken. He acknowledged that while crops may appear green, it does not guarantee a good yield. Sunflower crops have dried up, and chili plants are affected by disease.
Shivakumar urged the central government to assist farmers and consider debt relief. He referenced the agricultural loan waivers announced during Manmohan Singh’s administration, calling for similar support now. “It is the responsibility of the BJP to pressure the central government and the Prime Minister to forgive farmers’ debts, just as the previous government did,” he said.
He also mentioned that he has studied the costs associated with farmers’ sowing, cultivation, and operating tractors, and is considering additional support measures. Addressing delays in disbursing crop insurance payments, Shivakumar acknowledged that funds for old claims have not yet been released and that discussions are underway to resolve this issue.
Regarding allegations of a ₹30 crore discrepancy in the crop insurance scheme in Bagalkot, he indicated that a large network is involved in the irregularities. “There is a significant network operating across the state in insurance matters. I will request a report on this and hold a meeting in Bengaluru,” he stated.
While addressing a district-level meeting on drought assessment, Shivakumar noted that rainfall in Bagalkot has decreased by nearly 40%, leading to drought-like conditions in many areas.
